“One does not become enlightened by imagining figures of light, but by making the darkness conscious.”
I understand psychotherapy as a practice of developing the capacity to notice, with greater clarity and steadiness, what is actually happening within our internal and relational experience. While this may sound simple, it is often a deeply challenging and meaningful way of engaging with ourselves and our lives.
In therapy, we bring attention to thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and relational patterns as they arise in the present moment. As these patterns come into clearer awareness, they can be met with greater understanding, compassion, and choice. In this way, unconscious or automatic ways of being gradually become more visible and available for reflection.
From this perspective, change is not something imposed through effort alone, but something that often emerges through sustained awareness, reflection, and relational attunement. As we begin to see ourselves and our patterns more clearly, new possibilities for relating—to ourselves, to others, and to the world—naturally begin to unfold.
